“Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of intelligent effort.”

– John Ruskin

Gaming and Gaming industry is said to become the major form of entertainment in the near future or would like to say they already are. Which is why we understand and appreciate Game Testing as a crucial part of a game development company.

Over the last few years, big and small business have seen and adopted tremendous change in Game Testing. Testing has become more popular for several games and several applications as well. Many companies have realized the importance of structured testing of games and applications before its release.

WHAT EXACTLY IS QA TESTING?

Testers are described as a group of people who are paid to bring out the corrupt things about a project. In the Gaming Industry, this means that the testers are those who find flaws/bugs/issues and report them to the client or production teams. Finding and reporting flaws/bugs is what makes the tester’s job entertaining. QA Testers Find > Isolate > Submit > Regress Bugs/Issues.

Gaming field not only needs testers to be a keen gamer, but also curious, experimental, fearless, analytical, intelligent, and most importantly, have the ability to learn and adapt fast.

According to SpawnPoint, the video game industries consists of three main pillars, The Developers (who provides intellectual properties of a game design), Publishers (who are responsible for financial support  as well as bringing the product to the market) and the third is QA Testers (who are responsible for making sure that the game is behaving as intended and that it reaches the best possible quality standards).

MAJOR PARTS OF GAME QA TESTING INCLUDES

Functionality Quality Assurance which consists of ensuring the features of the game are technically ready for the release.

Localization Quality Assurance, which aims to find and analyze issues within a title’s translation.

Platform Certification, which verifies that a hardware manufacturers’ requirements are met within the game and a much more.

Additionally, QA Testing helps a game Pass Submission, which is the final test that determines whether a game’s software is ready to be released.

MISCONCEPTIONS OF QA TESTING AND QA TESTERS

We have come across a lot of misconceptions during our time in the Gaming Industry, so let’s have a look at it.

Testers merely play the game for fun

It is partially true. As testers have the curiosity to play and have a look of the features and controls of the game, they play the game before they start testing the same.

In fact, QA Testers often perform specific tasks given by clients. This actively minimizes the time spent “playing” the game which leads to a hefty amount of work.

Game QA Testing is a sophisticated job and is easy to perform

Game Testing is not as sophisticated as Software Testing. In Software Testing, the tester only has to ensure that the developed software meets and complies with defined or standardized quality specifications.

While Game Testing needs less formal training than QA Software Testing, the complexity of Game Testing is wildly different as testing creative and diverse types of games have made QA a very flexible and accommodating job.

PLAYING THE GAME AND TESTING THE GAME ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. IT IS SAFE TO SAY THAT A GAME MAY NOT SUCCEED WITHOUT QA TESTING.

SURVEY AND CONCLUSION

A survey of 129 participants using Google Docs was taken to find the impact of Game Industry and QA testing. The survey included questions like what types of games and on which platform do they play? If they ever come across any significant issues that affected their game-play? or whether they think QA Testing had something to do with the game or the game-play? The response to the survey was enlightening. Out of 129 participants, 97% answered that they had encountered issues/bugs when playing games and remarkable 82% of the participants thought that QA Testing was an important part of game development.

We at Spawn Point understand Quality Assurance and its importance to the Gaming Industry. The impact of Quality Assurance on video games are the biggest matters. Thus, we have dedicated and determined our passion of gaming towards making a change in the lives of the people around the world. On the other hand, we would also like to encourage people who can benefit from this blog who wants to be a part of the Video Game Industry.

As Video Games have become even more popular, the meaning of QA Testing has become supreme. Understanding the importance of QA Testing as early as possible could help many gaming companies in maintaining their reputations in end-users’ eye and to financially benefit from their games.

In the end, what matters the most is that the Active Gamers/Users keep the game companies running, so everything possible should be done in order to provide top-notch video games to gratify what customers’ desire.
